19:21rinlovesyou[d]: alsol looking forward to vulkan video for VR streaming, whenever that gets done
19:35linkmauve: rinlovesyou[d], you mean an extension for dual view mapping over a non-quad shape?
19:35linkmauve: rinlovesyou[d], Vulkan video is only about hardware decoding, similar to vaapi.
19:41rinlovesyou[d]: linkmauve: It does encode too, no?
19:42linkmauve: Yes, just like vaapi.
19:42rinlovesyou[d]: Simply talking about streaming video to a standalone headset
19:42linkmauve: But without the postprocessing parts that many video devices have, so you end up having to use the 3D parts which are much less efficient.
19:42rinlovesyou[d]: For wireless play on pcvr
19:43rinlovesyou[d]: Wivrn already supports it
22:01karolherbst[d]: not supported on your GPU
22:03karolherbst[d]: because nobody wrote the code yet to make it work
22:03karolherbst[d]: the only generations where it's somewhat supporter is kepler, 1st gen maxwell (GM10X) and some tesla boards (super old)
22:04karolherbst[d]: also.. I think the bridge to IRC doesn't like your name 🙃
22:04karolherbst[d]: or rather.. IRC nicks are all ascii
22:05karolherbst[d]: mhh... actually..
22:06karolherbst[d]: might need a bridge restart 🙃
22:06karolherbst[d]: I should update it anyway
22:07karolherbst[d]: there is no update
22:08karolherbst[d]: pavlo_kozlenko: try it out?
22:08karolherbst[d]: *now
22:08pavlo_kozlenko[d]: 123 test
22:08karolherbst[d]: yeah, seems to work now
22:08karolherbst[d]: though I think the bot uses the username, not the display name 🙃 maybe it was something else going on
22:12pavlo_kozlenko[d]: I have a question. Why did you all come together in a community here and write a nouveau driver? Why don't you switch to AMD for example.. (excuse me)? What is the project for? Like, to help those people who already have nvidia?
22:13karolherbst[d]: because it's fun mostly
22:13pavlo_kozlenko[d]: I know where it all started, and then it really made sense (because the nv driver was terrible). But why write a nouveau driver now?
22:14karolherbst[d]: why not?
22:15pavlo_kozlenko[d]: yea
22:16karolherbst[d]: anyway, I don't think anybody here has more reasons than it's a fun project, or random things like "it's cool hardware", just people wanting to do it out of various reasons
22:18pavlo_kozlenko[d]: People, who want to control how his videocard works (someone reason), yes?
22:44dwfreed: note that the new nvidia open source drivers don't support older hardware
22:44dwfreed: hell, the previous closed source drivers don't even support older hardware
22:47dwfreed: I have a kepler GPU in my laptop (which is admittedly over 10 years old now), and I have to use the nvidia 470 drivers or nouveau, and the 470 drivers are only being kept alive
22:49karolherbst[d]: well.. tho nvidia does provide those lts branches for a very loong time
22:50karolherbst[d]: nvidias is quite frankly the most ambitious vendor with that 😄
22:50dwfreed: And I'm thankful for that, because when I did try nouveau on this system (to be fair, it's a mac) it was not a great experience
22:51karolherbst[d]: ahh yeah...
22:51karolherbst[d]: macs..
22:52karolherbst[d]: is it an intel one or ppc?
22:52karolherbst[d]: mhhh
22:52dwfreed: intel
22:52karolherbst[d]: I think ppcs are too old for kepler 🙃
22:52dwfreed: just a bit :D
22:52dwfreed: late 13 retina pro, with the mux chip
22:52karolherbst[d]: ahhh...
22:52karolherbst[d]: those manual ones?
22:53karolherbst[d]: well "manual", but there were some where you needed to reboot for it to switch on macos 🙃
22:53dwfreed: yeah, in OS X you could tell when it switched to dedicated graphics because the screen would glitch for a moment
22:53karolherbst[d]: ohh, that's already the second gen
22:54karolherbst[d]: first one was even worse
22:54dwfreed: and then you'd have to babysit the task manager equivalent because some things would trigger dedicated graphics and not release it, and suddenly your battery life was an hour
22:54dwfreed: things I do not miss about OS X
22:56karolherbst[d]: there was this taskbar extension for it 😄
22:56karolherbst[d]: ehh not taskbar
22:56karolherbst[d]: title bar
22:56karolherbst[d]: like
22:56karolherbst[d]: where all those thingies go
22:56karolherbst[d]: https://gfx.io/
22:57karolherbst[d]: (that domain most cost millions)
22:57dwfreed: oh, handy
22:57karolherbst[d]: yeah
22:57karolherbst[d]: supported notifications and all that before notifications where a thing
22:57karolherbst[d]: *were
22:57karolherbst[d]: it could even force switching behavior
22:58dwfreed: yeah, good ol growl
22:58karolherbst[d]: like.. you could force it to igpu only
22:58karolherbst[d]: and then plugging in a display would do nothing
22:58karolherbst[d]: good times
22:58karolherbst[d]: could even force igpu only on battery
22:58karolherbst[d]: super useful
22:59karolherbst[d]: should be a core OS feature (tm)
22:59karolherbst[d]: well
22:59karolherbst[d]: not that it's needed anymore
22:59karolherbst[d]: well
22:59karolherbst[d]: now you know about this app 10 years too late
23:00karolherbst[d]: back in the PPC days, there was a kernel module provided by apple to developers, where you could enable more power savings for G4 power macs
23:00karolherbst[d]: it did indeed work, the CPU ran cooler and everything
23:00karolherbst[d]: however, it also caused noise on the audio output 🙃
23:06pavlo_kozlenko[d]: karolherbst[d]: due to the lack of filtering on the processor power phases?
23:13karolherbst[d]: dunno
23:22airlied[d]: I still have the retina mbp near at hand, still the nicest laptop screen I've used, pity about the keyboard
