13:15 cockroach: hi! I have a laptop with a GeForce 9400M that (sometimes) crashes when trying to suspend with nouveau, works fine with the legacy 340 driver. Is there anything I can do, other than trying to pin down the kernel version that broke it?
13:39 karolherbst: cockroach: what kernel are you on?
13:39 karolherbst: but we had somebody with a similiar gpu
13:39 karolherbst: and suspend problems
13:40 karolherbst: cockroach: do you have a crash log or something?
13:45 KitsuWhooa: that would be me :p
13:45 KitsuWhooa: (I think)
13:47 cockroach: karolherbst: currently I'm on 5.10, but I tried up to 5.13.7
13:48 KitsuWhooa: Ah, looks like it's a different issue to mine
13:48 cockroach: karolherbst: unforunately no, I don't have a serial console on the device and I don't get any crash info on the netconsole
13:48 cockroach: KitsuWhooa: so your problem went away with a more recent kernel?
13:49 KitsuWhooa: Mine was broken later than 5.10
13:49 cockroach: ah okay
13:49 karolherbst: cockroach: mhhhh
13:49 cockroach: mine broke somewhere between 4.19 and 5.10. that's a lot of commits :)
13:50 karolherbst: it is
13:50 karolherbst: thing is.. I tested my GPUs yesterday and suspending was fine :/
13:50 karolherbst: cockroach: do you have a second machine? you could set up netconsole
13:50 cockroach: karolherbst: I did that, but I didn't get any messages about a crash on the netconsole.
13:51 karolherbst: but you got messages in general?
13:51 KitsuWhooa: did you do no_console_suspend too?
13:51 karolherbst: or was it just empty?
13:51 karolherbst: netconsole is... tricky to set up correctly
13:51 cockroach: yes, I did get netconsole messages in general.
13:51 karolherbst: so as long as you don't see the full dmesg something is wrong
13:51 karolherbst: ahh okay
13:51 karolherbst: mhh
13:52 karolherbst: and the machine just crashes? annoying
13:52 cockroach: i *think* it does, it's hard to tell. it's an old macbook, the led that should flash just turns on and stays that way rather than slowly flashing. and it never wakes up from that state.
13:53 karolherbst: ohh
13:53 karolherbst: mhh
13:53 karolherbst: so it's resuming which is causing issues?
13:54 karolherbst: ohh wait.. I think you meant it just keeps being on
13:54 cockroach: I don't think it is. Normally when I close the lid, the LED turns on and then changes into a slowly flashing state after a few seconds. When the "crash" happens, it always stays on, so it never seems to really enter the sleep state.
13:54 cockroach: yes, exactly
13:54 karolherbst: cockroach: you are using wifi, correct?
13:55 karolherbst: mind tryihg to get the netconsole log with by using ethernet?
13:55 karolherbst: that usually works even though the network was already teared down in userspace
13:55 karolherbst: with wifi.. it doesn't
13:55 cockroach: karolherbst: I used ethernet for the netconsole, I think. But yeah, I can try again.
13:55 cockroach: that will take a few minutes to set up
13:56 karolherbst: cockroach: distributions are starting to package netconsole scripts though :D
13:56 karolherbst: never tried them though
13:57 cockroach: heh. probably a good idea, it is a bit of a pain to configure
13:57 karolherbst: I know that fedora has a package with a config file and systemd service, but...
13:58 karolherbst: might work, might not, dunno :D
13:58 karolherbst: stopped to care once I got my rs232 console
13:58 cockroach: heh.
13:58 cockroach: a good console makes life *so* much easier.
13:59 karolherbst: got one with a PCI bracket
14:01 karolherbst: those are two parts technically anyway.. the USB RS232 thingy and the RS232 to "random pins" thing :D
14:02 cockroach: heh
14:33 cockroach: well, this is frustrating. today the crashes seem to be different than last time. now some kernel that i *KNOW* crashed on the weekend just work, with others the problem has moved from crashing-on-suspend to just not waking up.
14:34 cockroach: I suppose I will be studying this further before bothering you again.
15:37 cockroach: so it looks like these could be two different issues - now that I'm on ethernet I don't get any crashes when suspending anymore, it just won't wake up. Probably something broken with wifi, but that was to be expected.
17:55 karolherbst: cockroach: ehh.. annoying
17:55 karolherbst: I am aware of some issues in regards to wake up though
19:59 cockroach: karolherbst: anything that has known workarounds to try out?
20:01 karolherbst: cockroach: not really. I just found out yesterday
20:01 cockroach: ah ok :)
