09:38fseit: Hi,yesterday i had to go so i cannot reply, dunno if HdkR or imirkin are online, but i summarize my situation if someone else who can give me an answer want to help. I whould like to know what does happen if i run a gt 1030 with nouveau and without kernel firmware, could i be able to get into my desktop or it does not even start? Could i be able to run my desktop at full hd? could i be able to run fullhd video?
09:39karolherbst: fseit: in theory it should work, even though OpenGL applications will run very slowly. We have some outstanding issues loading the signed firmware, so maybe it won't even work at all right now
09:41HdkR: In theory you'll get a display
09:42HdkR: woo for llvmpipe and software video decoding?
09:43karolherbst: HdkR: not if secboot fails
09:43karolherbst: then we mess up
09:44karolherbst: we should probably handle that better I guess :/
09:44fseit: any suggestion on kernel version or boot parameter to write into grub that could help?
09:44karolherbst: nouveau.modeset=0 always helps.. even though then you get even less nouveau
09:45karolherbst: anyway... unless nvidia learns, Linux users should just buy AMD hardware... we try to fix as much as possible, but especially with the signed firmware and stuff there isn't much we can do :/
09:45karolherbst: we would even be able to change the perf states, which we can't unless nvidia provides those firmwares
09:45karolherbst: or well.. put their firmwares under a redistributeable license
09:46fseit: with amd cards i still need to load the proprietary firmware, and that's something i whould like to avoid
09:48karolherbst: fseit: you have that with the gt 1030 as well
09:48fseit: that's a shame what gpu market is about be open, i don't need to play games, but just browse and play video nicely at fullhd
09:48karolherbst: since 2nd gen maxwell, we require signed firmware to do certain operations, which is just super painful to deal with
09:48fseit: i'm running with debian without non free firmware, and i don't want to load it
09:49fseit: do you think to do what i have to the firmware is needed or it will be just needed for more complicated tasks?
09:49HdkR: Don't want to use a GTX 780ti or something instead?
09:50karolherbst: fseit: it's needed
09:51karolherbst: and if it's not, than any GPU would do
09:51karolherbst: but you get sw rendering only
09:51fseit: i need to find an itx form factor card, i saw there is a 650ti that should be able to do it, correct me if i'm wrong
09:52karolherbst: fseit: "half-profile" is the term you are searching for, or is the length the problem and not the width?
09:53fseit: the lenght
09:56fseit: there will be differences about performance between 650 and 650ti?
09:57HdkR: 3D performance will be different
09:57karolherbst: tagr: 👍
09:58karolherbst: just saw your gv11b prep patches now :D
09:58fseit: i've found a used gtx 650 ti 1gb ram and a gtx 650 2gb ram, what should i chose for video playing?
09:58karolherbst: more VRAM is always a good idea
09:59fseit: thank you
09:59karolherbst: if you don't care about GL perf, VRAM is usually what you need in order to reduce the chance of running into out of memory situations
10:00fseit: do you think with this card i will have more power to run videos instead my gt 710?
11:10fseit: i hope it does, i ordered one, lets cross the fingers
11:10fseit: thank you for your help
