00:00 barteks2x: eDP1 is internal display
00:00 karolherbst: I assume this is either an older or a lenovo without a dock connector?
00:00 Habbie: card0 card0-DP-1 card0-DP-2 card0-eDP-1 card0-HDMI-A-1 renderD128
00:00 Habbie: on my dual-gpu lenovo set to discrete (so intel fully disabled)
00:00 karolherbst: Habbie: well, in dedicate only mode you only have one gpu to begin with
00:00 barteks2x: it is a bit old now, lenovo ideapad z510 from ~4 years ago
00:00 Habbie: all point to nvidia
00:00 Habbie: karolherbst, yes
00:01 barteks2x: unless by lenovo you actually mean only thinkpad
00:01 karolherbst: barteks2x: interesting.. anyway, less painful if all are wired to the intel gpu
00:01 Habbie: karolherbst, the intel doesn't even show up in lspci
00:01 Habbie: barteks2x, this is a recent thinkpad extreme x1
00:01 karolherbst: barteks2x: might be... I think we (RedHat) really mostly care about thinkpads... not hearing much about other laptops
00:02 karolherbst: Habbie: lenovos with DP might actually wire those up to the nvidia, especially if you can switch the mode
00:02 barteks2x: I've noticed. It was a lot of not-fun getting this nvidia GPU to actually keep working after suspend a few years ago
00:03 Habbie: karolherbst, in hybrid, everything is wired to nvidia except the laptop display
00:03 karolherbst: barteks2x: well, we always try to fix those bugs. And those usually happen on other laptops as well
00:03 karolherbst: Habbie: yeah, expected
00:03 karolherbst: it might be that this mode switch is some thinkpad only option
00:03 karolherbst: but for all of those it makes sense to do it that way on hardware
00:03 Habbie: karolherbst, but in hybrid mode, the nouveau driver (as shipped in debian buster) complains a lot and i need to pass a bunch of accel=0 kernel parameters to get a stable system
00:04 barteks2x: the bug was actually on the ACPI side, and the GPU would just refuse to switch it's power state after suspend. It was only fixed around kernel 4.16
00:04 karolherbst: :/
00:04 karolherbst: uff, yeah..
00:04 barteks2x: and even that probably only because I actually reported the issue
00:04 Habbie: karolherbst, i haven't really debugged any of it yet - i mostly don't travel with the laptop and discrete mode gives me internal display + HDMI on nouveau and this is working wonderfully as long as the laptop doesn't go to sleep..
00:05 karolherbst: well, I have some fixes which might actually fix a bunch of issues
00:05 karolherbst: just need to verify stuff
00:05 Habbie: cool
00:05 Habbie: my coworker on Arch has slightly better overall results, with his 5.x kernel
00:05 Habbie: debian buster ships some 4.19
00:05 barteks2x: And maybe a stupid question to ask, but what actually needs to be updated to get newer versions of nouveau? the kernel?
00:05 barteks2x: or something about mesa?
00:44 karolherbst: barteks2x: both, but it depends on where the issue/features are
