04:38 tlwoerner: X.Org has been accepted into GSoC 2019!
04:38 tlwoerner: if anyone has any ideas for, is interested in mentoring for, or knows of any students who might want to participate in this year's GSoC, please have a look at https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/wayland-devel/2019-March/040351.html
04:38 tlwoerner: students have until April 9, 1400EDT to submit their proposals
18:01 tjaalton: hi, nouveau on kernel 5.0 has issues on a hybrid machine, essentially hanging the machine. dmesg at https://launchpadlibrarian.net/416759000/dmesg_nouveau_activated_biosv1.7.0.log
18:01 tjaalton: *eventually, bah
18:14 karolherbst: tjaalton: yeah.. known issue. only nouveau.runpm=0 helps so far
18:14 karolherbst: ohh, actually that's another issue
18:15 karolherbst: okaym secboot fails
18:15 karolherbst: nouveau.modeset=0 then
18:16 tjaalton: so not fixed in 5.1 either?
18:17 karolherbst: no.. it's complicated as this needs nvidia to do stuff
18:18 tjaalton: firmware?
18:18 karolherbst: it's probably a bug within the firmware they are providing to us
18:18 karolherbst: yeah
18:18 karolherbst: happend in the past, fixed a few boards, but there are still issues
18:19 tjaalton: okay
21:26 Exagone313: karolherbst: hmm what is this issue about? because I was going to ask something about a hang, that happens "randomly" when the machine on, usually when firefox is open, but nouveau is my prime suspect since I had similar issues in the past (but this time the system is completely locked out, it's no longer connected to the network router)
21:27 Exagone313: (affected on 4.19 and 5.0)
21:32 karolherbst: Exagone313: depends on what is in the log, but both things are not really working out that well and for both we need nvidia to do stuff :/ sadyl
21:32 karolherbst: *sadly
21:33 Exagone313: I can't get any log, because the whole system hangs
21:35 Exagone313: I'm reading the bugtrackers
21:35 karolherbst: Exagone313: does nouveau.runpm=0 help?
21:36 Exagone313: I added it, will see after a reboot
21:36 Exagone313: the thing is it's completely random. after last mesa update I thought it was fixed, but it happened again today. some days no hang, some days bad luck
21:37 Exagone313: non deterministic issues drive me crazy
21:47 Exagone313: karolherbst: actually I got this firefox profile that restores a lot of tabs, and it always freeze during that restoration. just tried it, I'm affected with runpm=0 too
21:47 karolherbst: huh ohh mhh
21:47 karolherbst: Exagone313: ohh you don't have a laptop, right?
21:47 Exagone313: no, and no igpu either
21:48 Exagone313: so I can't try with another gpu to check if nouveau if not the issue
21:48 Exagone313: maybe with the poor other driver it could load some graphics, though?
21:49 Exagone313: or maybe in headless mode...
21:53 karolherbst: mhh, might be some multi threading bug ...
21:53 karolherbst: Exagone313: try to start firefox with LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1
21:53 Exagone313: I tried it too
21:55 Exagone313: your own guess would be that nouveau isn't concerned? or could still be?
21:55 karolherbst: hard to say
21:56 Exagone313: I run Xorg, not Wayland (I've seen an issue about Wayland on the bugtracker). arch linux kernel (linux 5.0 and linux-lts 4.19).
21:57 karolherbst: Exagone313: do you have xf86-video-nouveau installed?
21:57 Exagone313: I do
21:57 Exagone313: I also have the firmware for video decoding
21:58 Exagone313: *accel?
21:58 karolherbst: mhh
21:58 karolherbst: mind posting your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file?
22:01 Exagone313: https://ewd.xyz/b6ac0c.log (the .old doesn't contain anything specific at the end, just not the -2 lines)
22:01 karolherbst: huh
22:01 karolherbst: those -2 lines are weird
22:01 Exagone313: I agree
22:02 karolherbst: mhh, well without logs that will be painful to figure out what's going on
22:02 karolherbst: usually a ssh connection doing "dmesg -w" might help
22:02 karolherbst: or netconsole
22:02 Exagone313: yeah but system is completely frozen, it's disconnected from the enwtrok
22:02 Exagone313: network*
22:03 Exagone313: can't even ping, it says there is no route or alike. I do have sshd running for such cases :/
22:09 karolherbst: right
22:09 karolherbst: but you should still get something
22:09 karolherbst: all of that doesn't happen instantly
22:09 karolherbst: dmesg -w is the trick here
22:10 Exagone313: oh I see
22:10 Exagone313: ok let's try that
22:29 Exagone313: karolherbst: you know what, nouveau is not the issue, it's stupid. I just tried to start htop while restoring that buggy session and it causes an out of memory (but even sysrq F doesn't work then). I'm almost certain the random crash I got is the same issue. The worse is that memory grows so fast that even earlyoom doesn't have the time to kill firefox.
22:30 Exagone313: thanks for your help, now is the time to check firefox bugzilla
22:30 karolherbst: uff, how much RAM do you have? 8GB?
22:30 Exagone313: s/random crash/random freeze/
22:30 Exagone313: yeah
22:30 karolherbst: mhhh, yeah, that's calling for troubles these days
22:30 karolherbst: Exagone313: try disabling your swap :D
22:30 karolherbst: at least it won't freeze
22:31 karolherbst: just crash
22:31 Exagone313: ddr4 memory is still expensive, I got one 8GB stick for 120€ last year
22:31 karolherbst: it should be cheaper now
22:31 karolherbst: I got 32GB for 240€ or something
22:31 karolherbst: I was surprised as well
22:32 Exagone313: I added 8GB swap it's a new install, because it was annoying to wait for oom (while swapping I can manually kill programs), because I'm compiling stuff that takes a lot of memory
22:32 karolherbst: oh, you have a destop, right?
22:32 karolherbst: buy RAM :p
22:32 karolherbst: it's cheap
22:32 karolherbst: 32GB for 140€
22:33 Exagone313: that's what I have in my bank account actually
22:33 Exagone313: it'll wait
22:33 karolherbst: Exagone313: alternatives: zram or zswap
22:33 Exagone313: I'm not going to reinstall on zfs right noz
22:34 karolherbst: you won't have to reinstall
22:34 karolherbst: zram and zswap are memory compression techniques
22:34 karolherbst: which essentially report themselves as swap
22:34 Exagone313: I thought it was related to zfs?
22:34 karolherbst: but instead of swapping into an HDD or SSD you swap into compressed RAM
22:34 karolherbst: no
22:34 karolherbst: not at all
22:34 Exagone313: ok
22:34 karolherbst: I use zram as a ram disc often
22:34 Exagone313: I see
22:34 karolherbst: zram behaves like block devices so you can even use it as a tmpfs replacement
22:35 karolherbst: zswap is more tight to be an actual swap
22:35 karolherbst: you can have 8GB RAM + 8 GB zram swap without running into issues
22:35 karolherbst: things get slow when things start to swap, but... swaping to disc (Which is the only alternative) is even slower ;)
