00:51marll: Hello, folks.
00:52marll: Would any of the devs like to hear a problem I had with Nouveau at the desktop manager/authentication phase of a couple distros?
00:52karolherbst: marll: depends on the problem
00:52marll: It was basically a blank screen until I blindly set in my password and pressed enter. When DE loaded, I could see everything again.
00:53marll: My GPU is Quadro FX 1800M.
00:54marll: I tried it twice (after system updating to see if that might fix it) and it was reproduced. After I installed proprietary driver and rebooted, I could see the authentication screen/desktop management phase.
00:54karolherbst: uff, that's an old GPU
00:55karolherbst: oh, actually not that old
00:55marll: Yeah, it's quite decent.
00:55marll: It's like 335M or something.
00:56marll: This one is also a rare GDDR5 model, if that is of any relevance.
00:56karolherbst: shouldn't matter
00:56karolherbst: mainly wondering what software was running?
00:56marll: Ok, thought maybe nouveau 'programs' the id of 1800m to work as if it's DDR3 or something and that could cause some weird issues. (What do I know! heh)
00:58marll: It was Solus OS. I also tried Deepin OS and it had a very similar problem, but it was with their installer. I selected Deepin in boot manager and it produced to load, had a flashy Deepin logo, etc, but then screen turned blank. I tried on a different laptop and in that phase, Deepin was asking to select language (with no DE loaded, just a colored background and a window with selection).
00:59marll: I will have to go in 15mins but if you have any steps I could try to isolate the issue, I would be happy to do that to be able to provide the results in a day or so.
00:59marll: I am also currently not on the laptop in question.
11:51maxthecat: Can anyone tell me where can I find the channel descriptor of NVF1 in source code? I want to know the channel memory structure.
18:11karolherbst: nice.. seems like with NIR nouveau is a touch faster :)
19:40dr_evil: is noveau for NV43 still supported? i'm getting GUI freezes immediately when VLC is used to play a video, or kaffeine is used, with latest arch linux
19:40dr_evil: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: gr: intr 00100000 [ERROR] nsource 00000020 [LIMIT_ZETA] nstatus 06000000 [BAD_ARGUMENT PROTECTION_FAULT] ch 6 [0012d000 vlc] subc 7 class 4097 mthd 0204 data 01800000
19:41karolherbst: dr_evil: mhhh, could be related to multithreading
19:41dr_evil: for example. and when I try to disable acceleration by kernel parameter, I get "Segmentation fault" 5 times and beeing dropped to a non responding rescue shell
19:41karolherbst: dr_evil: essentially vdpau + gl inside the process = big fail
19:43dr_evil: i can switch vlc from automatic or openGL whch both crash to something else that works, but not kaffeine. and firefox scrolling also freezes for short periods
19:44dr_evil: karolherbst: so whats the best solution, getting other hardware? the nvidia driver no longer supports NV43
19:48karolherbst: mhh, normally AMD has good open source support
19:48karolherbst: we also want to fix those issues
19:49karolherbst: I have some work in progress, but it still needs some time
19:49karolherbst: dr_evil: I've heard that mplayer works just fine
19:50karolherbst: dr_evil: could you check if running vlc or firefox with "LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1" set works better?
19:50dr_evil: I'm using koffeine to watch DVB-S. or at least I was doing until today I decided to update, because last update I did on that machine was 2016 (I was afraid to update, had been broken so often)
19:51karolherbst: dr_evil: yeah.. most likely applications started to do more GL in general and having multiple contexts ain't that great right now
19:52dr_evil: karolherbst: sure I can try that.
20:01dr_evil: sorry, can't properly test. system is running out of memory. there are 2GB, but somehow the arch linx update made a problem
20:01dr_evil: Out of memory: Kill process 1787 (baloo_file_extr) score 436 or sacrifice child
20:02dr_evil: baloo_file_extr has right now restarted and is again using 950 MB , and 257 GB virtual
20:02dr_evil: don't know what that is
20:09karolherbst: that's plasma file indexing
20:09karolherbst: dr_evil: systemsettings -> search -> enable file search
20:09karolherbst: you can disable that
20:10karolherbst: dr_evil: with 2GB of RAM you probably on't want that or you have to get more RAM
20:12dr_evil: thanks. I don't think I can continue debuggig this today any further. right now sitting in living room with notebook, but even the ssh connection to that machine is no longer working properly
20:15dr_evil: Out of memory: Kill process 2122 (baloo_file_extr) score 411 or sacrifice child
20:15dr_evil: somehow this keeps restarting & beeing killes
20:37dr_evil: karolherbst: finally! with LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 I can run vlc with both autmatic or OpenGL output playing a video, firefox and DVB-T beeing played by kaffeine concurrently without problems
20:38dr_evil: also tried youtube video playback in firefox, no problem
20:39dr_evil: well, it gets slow after the second concurrent video ;)
22:07marll: Hello, did anyone react to my yesterday's question about FX 1800M misbehaving with Nouveau drivers?
22:16karolherbst: dr_evil: well, opengl is ran on the CPU with that, but vdpau should still be hardware accelerated
22:17karolherbst: marll: I don't think so. It's also quite hard to suggest anything :/ I think you should create a bug and be as specific as possible
22:17karolherbst: like what software is used
22:17karolherbst: and what kernel/mesa version, etc...
