19:51 RSpliet: karolherbst: congrats on your job at IBM
19:51 karolherbst: RSpliet: huh?
19:51 RSpliet: https://newsroom.ibm.com/2018-10-28-IBM-To-Acquire-Red-Hat-Completely-Changing-The-Cloud-Landscape-And-Becoming-Worlds-1-Hybrid-Cloud-Provider
19:51 karolherbst: wow...
19:52 karolherbst: why didn't I know about that before :D
19:52 karolherbst:reads internal Mailing list
19:53 RSpliet: Because trading on inside knowledge is forbidden, so your board of directors had an obligation to keep this secret ;-)
19:54 karolherbst: no, they don't
19:54 karolherbst: it shouldn't leak outside, but you can tell something like that internally
19:56 aydio: karolherbst: any initial thoughts, if I may ask? :P
19:56 airlied: no you really can't :-)
19:57 airlied: it has to be told internally at same time as publically
19:57 karolherbst: airlied: really? troublesome :/
19:58 karolherbst: aydio: yeah, dunno, depends on what might change
19:58 airlied: nobody knows what will change, it will take 6m->1y to begin, and 2y-3y I reckon for subsequent reorgs
19:59 airlied: or 4-5ys if there is enough resistance
19:59 karolherbst: mhhh
19:59 karolherbst: yeah... but IBM
20:00 karolherbst: I mean, they only care about cloud
20:00 karolherbst: ex IBMs employees are pretty upset about IBM though
20:00 karolherbst: or well, that's normally the thing I got told from ex IBM employees
20:21 RSpliet: On the plus side... it's not Oracle
20:25 karolherbst: ....
20:25 karolherbst: yeah, true
20:49 joepublic: What are the two or three fastest cards under nouveau? I am looking an lots of phoronix graphs and I see it depends on what driver they use but I don't understand model number-to-driver mapping well enough to figure it out and I want to buy a fast card given trisquel running nouveau
20:49 karolherbst: joepublic: 780 ti would be more or less the fastest
20:49 karolherbst: joepublic: anything which is kepler _might_ be fine
20:49 karolherbst: but
20:49 karolherbst: if you muy a new one and you only care about open source, you should be more happy with AMD
20:50 karolherbst: we try our best
20:50 karolherbst: but...
20:50 karolherbst: we basically need like 10x as many devs as we have right now :D
20:50 joepublic: Thank you very much for the answers. afaik AMD cards run in trisquel using the "vesa" or "fb" or some such due to no free firmware. Which Nvidia card was exactly what I was asking.
20:51 joepublic: And I already have a nice fairly new AMD card... That's the problem. :)
20:53 karolherbst: ohh
20:54 karolherbst: yeah, you need firmware for AMD cards
20:54 karolherbst: guess there is no way around that
20:54 karolherbst: so in that case, kepler are the latest nvidia cards without those and decent perf
20:56 joepublic: It looks like 780 ti cards, major manufacturer (EVGA), pre-owned, are going for about US$150 on ebay. That's reasonable.
20:57 karolherbst: well
20:57 karolherbst: you can always be out of luck
20:57 karolherbst: and it won't reclock that well
20:57 karolherbst: so, it's a risk ;)
20:57 karolherbst: but we might be able to fix the issues fast
20:57 karolherbst: or maybe not
20:58 joepublic: I like having PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWER in my PC of course, but to be honest, the most demanding game I play is probably Tux Kart.
