05:18 coredump: finally got my PRIME working with nouveau but didn't solve my main problem :
09:02 karolherbst: pmoreau: yeah, it might be that we don't need that OpTypeBool patch anymore.. I think we can ignore it until we hit another issue
16:46 pendingchaos: mwk: have you looked at https://github.com/envytools/envytools/pull/138?
17:22 pmoreau: karolherbst: Okay. I’ll send the latest series to the ML tonight, if things go according to plan.
18:44 captainchris: hi
18:54 captainchris: anyone is here ?
18:54 annadane: captainchris, just ask your question
19:04 captainchris: I have a bug with nouveau driver under linux
19:04 captainchris: https://admin.over-blog.com/write/92383270
19:04 captainchris: last picture
19:08 pmoreau: captainchris: FYI, that link requires to sign-in. Also, which kernel are you on, and which GPU do you have?
19:09 captainchris: linux 4.14.41-1-lts nvidia gt240
19:10 captainchris: I re upload picture
19:13 captainchris: pmoreau https://ibb.co/jMuaY8
19:13 captainchris: and after the computer freeze
19:13 pmoreau: Works better, thanks
19:13 captainchris: thanks for you
19:13 pmoreau: Did you already post about that issue a few days ago, or was it someone else?
19:14 captainchris: Before i used nvidia
19:14 captainchris: I went yesterday on the chat
19:14 pmoreau: Okay
19:15 captainchris: and nvidia can't use with xorg-1.20
19:15 pmoreau: This error, on GT240, doesn’t ring a bell. Let me check the bugzilla to be sure.
19:15 captainchris: sure
19:16 pendingchaos: I think some updated drivers were recently released that work with xorg 1.20?
19:16 RSpliet: captainchris: what did you do to trigger these problems, and what is your uptime?
19:17 pmoreau: pendingchaos: The latest 390 does support xorg 1.20, but it doesn’t look like they updated the 340.xx series.
19:17 captainchris: I don't know traditionnal use of my computer
19:18 RSpliet: captainchris: is your uptime measured in seconds, minutes, hours, days or weeks?
19:18 captainchris: maybe 30 minutes of use
19:18 captainchris: and computer freeze
19:18 pendingchaos: pmoreau: 340 is required for Tesla gpus?
19:19 pmoreau: pendingchaos: It’s the last series supporting them
19:19 RSpliet: captainchris: is it reproducably ~30 minutes? Or "irregular, sometimes 30 mins, sometimes multiple hours"?
19:19 captainchris: irregular
19:19 captainchris: now I'm using nouveau driver and i don't have a bug
19:21 RSpliet: Thanks. There have been known problems across the board of 2nd gen Tesla cards (of which I think the 240 is a fine example) hanging pseudo-randomly, that are near-impossible to debug. Been lingering for years, we re-he-heally don't know what might be going on... I'm not sure how many generations of cards recent rework goes back, but there may(...) be a few fixes underway for the 4.18 kernel that could make a difference
19:22 captainchris: if i change my card what card do you recommand me to buy ?
19:22 imirkin_: AMD
19:22 RSpliet: I had this on my G210m laptop, and it happened usually after several hours. Never managed to bug me enough to ditch nouveau, but I've never seen this completely disappear. Same on Fermi-gen cards.
19:22 RSpliet: imirkin_: is that an autoreply?
19:22 imirkin_: should be.
19:23 imirkin_: stay away from NVIDIA if you care about open-source
19:23 pmoreau: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=69465 is the closest I can find, but it’s an old bug, so not sure how relevant
19:23 captainchris: amd has proprietary driver
19:23 RSpliet: pmoreau: there's a couple like that
19:23 imirkin_: their driver is upstreamed in the kernel
19:23 captainchris: with catalyst it's the same problem
19:23 pmoreau: They also have an open-source one.
19:23 imirkin_: all open-source
19:23 RSpliet: captainchris: AMD and Intel also have excellent open source drivers
19:24 imirkin_: while they did have some issues about 5-10 years ago
19:24 imirkin_: they are by far the best nowadays (along with Intel)
19:24 captainchris: imirkin_: you recommand me intel
19:24 captainchris: ??
19:24 imirkin_: (but you can't buy an Intel add-on board)
19:24 captainchris: yes
19:24 captainchris: I don't play big 3d game
19:25 imirkin_: intel has very good driver support
19:25 RSpliet: pmoreau: there's a few similar bug reports
19:25 captainchris: I just want a card to run godot game engine and create little games
19:25 pmoreau: imirkin_: Well, at least not yet, but maybe in the future, according to rumours?
19:25 imirkin_: pmoreau: ?
19:25 pmoreau: RSpliet: Not that many that matched my search :-D
19:25 RSpliet: imirkin_: https://www.techpowerup.com/241669/intel-unveils-discrete-gpu-prototype-development
19:25 pmoreau: imirkin_: Intel is rumoured to be building a discrete GPU
19:25 imirkin_: pmoreau: oh, re a discrete card. yes.
19:26 imirkin_: not available in stores today.
19:26 pmoreau: Indeed
19:26 imirkin_: except in some very special stores that still sell the i740 :)
19:26 imirkin_: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel740
19:26 imirkin_: (i think support for that is a bit lacking on linux though)
19:27 imirkin_: allegedly ville has one
19:27 pmoreau: Probably not that many users either
19:27 RSpliet: imirkin_: which reminds me. Don't by Imagination Tech GPUs either if you care about open source :-P
19:27 imirkin_: RSpliet: hehe. and i don't! :)
19:28 imirkin_: [also if you care about functional drivers...]
19:28 RSpliet: Love that wiki page. "350 nm graphics processing unit" implies either a very large node size, or a very very small GPU
19:28 imirkin_: why not both
19:32 captainchris: ok thanks everybody
19:40 annadane: i formally accuse nvidia of astroturfing, there's a few comments on reddit along lines of "but intel and amd have backdoors tooooooooooo"
20:02 coredump: so, has anyone had issues with QT/KDE applications showing a black area on some windows?
20:02 coredump: I thought it was 3D windows only, but it happens on the control panel now
20:05 pmoreau: coredump: Haven’t seen that, but I’m using the Intel iGPU for driving the display, and on the work computer, I’m using the blob.
20:33 coredump: yeah I ahve an intel backing a nvidia
20:37 imirkin_: coredump: probably using DRI2
20:37 imirkin_: iirc KDE had some kind of unsolvable issue with DRI2 and offloading
