00:36orbea: is there a set of patches for karolherbst branch that can be applied to upstream kernels? Or do I just use his 4.5.0 branch?
00:56orbea: well, I isntalled his branch, will report back when I bother to reboot..
04:52karolherbst: orbea: my branch is based on 4.6, but you could basically just get the patches (around 40) and apply them to a kernel with a proper -p parameter
04:53orbea: 4.6? I thought it was 4.5? DId I compile the wrong one?
04:54orbea: well, its working here, pstate doesn't cause cause the dmesg error anymore and I got around 10 more fps out of xenosaga.
04:55orbea: I got this https://github.com/karolherbst/linux/tree/nouveau_4.5_reclocking
04:56karolherbst: this is old :p
04:56karolherbst: and has some issues
04:56orbea: mind linking me to the correct one then? :)
04:56karolherbst: this is the current thing: https://github.com/karolherbst/nouveau/tree/stable_reclocking_kepler_v5
04:56karolherbst: but this isn't a kernel tree
04:56orbea: ah, thanks
04:57karolherbst: yeah, the kernel tree doesn't have the speedo thing yet
04:57karolherbst: so the calculated voltage is most likely wrong
04:57karolherbst: and other stuff
05:06orbea: do you happen to have any documention on building it? I might be missing something simple... http://dpaste.com/03Y7R77
05:09karolherbst: orbea: you have to run make inside drm
05:09karolherbst: anyway, have to go now :p
05:10orbea: thanks for the help
14:34zeq: I've been trying to get kde plasma 5 (wayland) working with my GTX 8800 using nouveau. Has anybody any success? I've got the plasmashell running, but nouveau crashes on launching pretty much anything.
14:37zeq: kernel log here: http://www.snewbury.org.uk/kernel.log
15:19imirkin_: ah, the ever-popular 406040 error. no clue why it happens.
16:01zeq: imirkin_: was that in response to me?
16:02imirkin_: zeq: yes
16:02zeq: It is reproducible every time running plasma-wayland
16:02zeq: all it takes is opening a window ...
16:03zeq: is it an nv50 specific bug?
16:03imirkin_: zeq: the whole tesla line gets hit by it
16:03imirkin_: some people get hit more than others, for reasons unknown
16:03imirkin_: i've almost never gotten it on any of my cards
16:04imirkin_: others get it all the time, doing the exact same things
16:04zeq: plasma-wayland works for you?
16:04imirkin_: no :)
16:04imirkin_: but other things where we were doing the same thing
16:04imirkin_: but maybe not EXACTLY the same thing
16:04imirkin_: i personally have no interest in plasma or wayland, so i haven't tried those
16:05imirkin_: (and installing would require pulling in all of kde, which i also am allergic to)
16:05zeq: since it's 100% reproducible any ideas on how to debug it?
16:05imirkin_: unfortunately not. something goes wrong with command buffer submission
16:05zeq: imirkin_ Wayland is pretty important IMHO.
16:06imirkin_: if you say so. i see no use for it to me until something forces me to switch.
16:07imirkin_: which i anticipate won't happen for another 5-10 years
16:23zeq: imirkin_: Yes, I'm pretty sure X11 is going to be supported for at least that long for the major toolkits so nothing will force you to switch for a while. However, if you ever try a Wayland compositor you'd feel why there's so much hype vs running a compositor on top of X11/Xorg: Latency really is noticeably better, and nothing tears.
16:24imirkin_: i use X to be able to have more terminals up on the screen
16:24imirkin_: tearing isn't a major issue :)
16:24zeq: smooth scrolling terminals? ;-)
16:24imirkin_: can't stand that
16:24imirkin_: all the smooth scroll stuff is really annoying
16:25zeq: only because it goes far too slowly (so as not to tear!)
16:25imirkin_: besides i use aterm - no other terminal i'm aware of properly implements everything i'm used to for the past 10-15 years.
16:25imirkin_: and as development on it has stopped ages ago, unlikely to work natively in wayland
16:25zeq: smooth scrolling is a silly hack to work around not being able to keep up with vblank in real-time :)
16:25imirkin_: you mean non-smooth scrolling?
16:26imirkin_: you could be right, but i really like the fixed positions
16:26imirkin_: i have no use for seeing half a line of text
16:26zeq: the "smooth scrolling" you get in web browsers is just faking vblank synced real-time scrolling
16:26imirkin_: i just get taller monitors and avoid having to scroll
16:26zeq: yeah :)
16:27imirkin_: 1920 is a lot of scrolling height :)
16:27zeq: floor to ceiling! :)
16:27imirkin_: some day
16:37zeq: Anyway, it doesn't get around my point that *other* people see wayland as important. It would be
16:37zeq: good if there was some way to figure out what's triggering the error, no?
16:38imirkin_: yes, it would be good
16:39imirkin_: i was merely pointing out the reasons why i hadn't played with wayland
16:43zeq: yeah, I realise that. Still nothing stops you running aterm with XWayland! ;-) FWIW the error occurs with both the OGL2 and GLES2 backends.
16:45imirkin_: zeq: indeed. just nothing compels me to do so either.
16:46DebianLinuxero: I wish to know which kernel for is planned this patch : https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=95044
16:47imirkin_: afaik RSpliet hasn't submitted it upstream yet
16:48DebianLinuxero: Just to estimate, the patches you are submitting now, for which kernel are?
16:50DebianLinuxero: 4.7? 4.8?
16:53RSpliet: DebianLinuxero: skeggsb was convinced that he had a card for which this will break reclocking. I can't bring this patch upstream until he confirms or denies the situation
16:54imirkin_: RSpliet: could you make it only ignore the thing on tesla?
16:55DebianLinuxero: Oh, I see. Well. Then I'll continue patching my kernels manually.
16:56RSpliet: imirkin_: I think it was a Tesla
16:56RSpliet: assigned the bug to him, so he can take further action on this
16:59DebianLinuxero: RSpliet : Your patch makes my card cool. Thanks for the effort.
17:00imirkin_: RSpliet: huh ok. for some reason i thought that skeggsb hadn't really looked into tesla reclocking
17:02RSpliet: imirkin_: there is no GDDR3 reclocking in nouveau post-tesla
17:02imirkin_: right, only DDR3
19:10orbea: karolherbst: heh, I made a slackbuild for you branch. :) https://notabug.org/orbea/SlackBuilds-git/src/master/system/nouveau
19:46karolherbst: orbea: :D hehe
19:47karolherbst: I hope skeggsb will find some time to review those patches :p
19:49orbea: it seems to be working for me :)
