08:23 EisNerd: Hi I have a new system with a 8700G and I can't play anything 3d, as the games freeze after a very short time and then the screen flickers one or two times, music goes on and partially the game also (given sound changes based on keyboard). Flicker seems to occur when GPU is reset according to dmesg.
08:28 EisNerd: How well is driver coverage for the embeded GPU in the 8700G? amdgpu-pro? amdvlk (not tried yet, fighting with the build)? RADV?
08:29 EisNerd: tried already MESA from GIT, no change
08:31 EisNerd: and how important is the kernel here? Anything important in 6.7.x?
08:36 EisNerd: basically, should I open a new bug report or is this known thing, I failed to spot
08:36 Venemo: dormito: we can't help you without knowing more details of your system
08:37 Venemo: EisNerd: what chip family is being reported from your chip?
08:37 EisNerd: inxi?
08:38 Venemo: RADV_DEBUG=info vkcube
08:38 Venemo: also, do simple applications also hang your GPU or only games?
08:44 EisNerd: vkcube works
08:48 EisNerd: name = GFX1103_R1
08:49 EisNerd: family 89
08:50 EisNerd: is there a way to increase the memory allowed to use for the embedded gpus?
08:50 EisNerd: it reports 2g, but I can easyly spend 4
08:51 Venemo: good question, I thought the kernel can dynamically change that
08:52 Venemo: EisNerd: so, what apps exactly hang the GPU then? any game at all or are there specific ones?
08:54 EisNerd: any
08:54 EisNerd: Halo, Hogwarts, FarmingSim19
08:55 EisNerd: or vkmark
09:01 hakzsam: EisNerd: coverage should be good, at least for RADV. is your system up-to-date?
09:01 hakzsam: to increase the GTT size you can add this kernel option 'amdgpu.gttsize=xxx'
09:03 EisNerd: hakzsam: yes it is, as said mesa is from git (currently, otherwise 24.0.1), kernel 6.6.16
09:05 EisNerd: or Fallout3
09:06 hakzsam: try using very latest firmwares (linux-firmware-git)
09:06 hakzsam: is it the 760M or the 780M?
09:07 EisNerd: I have 20240115, anything relevant since then?
09:07 EisNerd: 780m (8700G)
09:08 hakzsam: apparently some people reported more stability with very recent fw
09:10 EisNerd: ok will try
09:17 dormito: Venemo: sure: it's an AMD Ryzen 7 5700U using the intigrated, amdgpu pci dev ids: 1002:164c (on kernel 6.5.5 at the time, though I've since rebooted to a newer kernel). though my question was more: "is this known, possibly analyzed, behavior?"
09:19 EisNerd: hakzsam: give me a minute, I'll update to 6.6.17 when rebooting anyway and add the kernel commandline arg
09:20 EisNerd: or would I need to add it on module load
09:23 Venemo: dormito: please open an issue report on the Mesa gitlab and provide steps to reproduce the problem
09:24 EisNerd: I think modprobe.d is the right place
09:25 EisNerd: btw, someone a good idea how to get some debug log rescued when the boot stops on efi stub message loading initramfs from commandline? (likely kernel config issue, I'd like to understand)
09:25 EisNerd: (beside attaching a serial, no idea if this would be possible on modern systems)
09:46 EisNerd: any env I should/may set when trying a game?
09:46 EisNerd: RADV_DEBUG=hang I already tried, but it does not produce sth
10:19 EisNerd: ok it is the firmware, now I was able to do the tutorial 1 of FS19
10:19 EisNerd: before it hung latest after 2 or 3 minutes
10:19 EisNerd: or more 1
10:19 EisNerd: thx
10:20 EisNerd: this evening => Halo MCE :))
10:27 EisNerd: btw is there anything, which is an advantage of using amdgpu-pro or amdvlk over RADV? (Better graphics or sth like this, as performance does not seem to be the point today)
10:30 hakzsam: Good to know that your issue is fixed with latest fw
10:32 EisNerd: at least it looks a lot like, I'll check in the evening with more demanding things, like vkmark, Hogwarts and Halo
10:34 EisNerd: hopeing to get my RAM hazle sorted tomorrow, the corsair vengeance does only work in jdec, so I'm going to return it and getting a bit less speced but likely better fitting GSkill Z5
10:35 EisNerd: then we can see, what this thing can do, the CPU is really powerful, 16 threads at almost 4.9GHz under full load is impressive
22:53 Venemo: EisNerd: we work on RADV so we cannot give you an impartial reply other than, feel free to experiment and choose what works best for you
